Japans last medium tank
The requierments made by the Department of Army Weaponry was to switch the main focus of their tanks from infantry support missions to anti tank missions. Along with this the weight requierment was raised from 20 tonnes to 35 tonnes and increased armour from 50mms to 75mms. It would also mount a new 75mm gun and just like the Germans they wanted to start doing quality over quantity.
Out of these requierments came the Chi-Ri. It was to mount the new 75mm Type 5 along with an hull mounted 37mm. It had 75mm of armour on the turret front and the hull and it weighed 37 tonnes. However, like many other Japanese projects in 1945 there was only one made due to material shortages. Mannpower working on the project were also directed to work on the Type 4 Chi-To medium tank instead due to it actually being a more practical and close finished design.
The only prototype was later captured by the US and was brought in for evaluation. And sadly like many other Japanese tanks the Chi-Ri was later scrapped in 1952
